Monitoring and Reporting

Achieving Target 3 requires sufficient monitoring and reporting to ensure protected areas and OECMs are established and managed in ways to maintain biodiversity in the long term, at both the site and systems level.

The following resources are available for monitoring and reporting on various aspects of protected areas and OECMs. Once the GBF indicators have been finalised, these tools will be reorganised into the official indicators.

Providing data to Protected Planet: a quick guide

The Protected Planet Initiative houses several databases and other information resources that are joint products of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the UN Environment Programme, managed by the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC).

This guide provides a brief overview of how to provide data and what to expect after doing so. The guide is available in English, Spanish, French and Russian

The video “Reporting protected area data to Protected Planet” offers practical step-by-step guidance on how a country can update its national dataset. It also provides clear solution under different scenarios: only tabular changes are needed, if changes to spatial data are needed or if protected areas are missing.
